U.S. 12-year-old graduates high school, college in same week

SALISBURY, North Carolina: A 12-year-old North Carolina boy spent the Covid lockdown taking classes online and will graduate this month, earning both a high school and college degrees.

Mike Wimmer, 12 years-old, of Salisbury, will graduate May 21 from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College with an associate’s degree, as well as a high school degree from Concord Academy High School on May 28.

Wimmer will also be his high school class valedictorian. He will graduate with a 5.45 GPA from high school and a 4.0 GPA at college.

“I went through all of the grades in school at a faster pace,” Wimmer told WCNC-TV. “I’m like a sponge, I take in knowledge very fast.”

Wimmer recalled that due to the lockdown, he discovered that if he added only a few extra classes he could graduate from both schools at the same time. He was able to complete two years of high school and two years of community college classes in a single year.

He told local media he is considering his next options, which might include enrolling in a new school, going to work or starting a business.

Wimmer added that he remains an avid baseball player and enjoys building Lego sets.

“A lot of people think I’ve given up my childhood or somehow lost it,” Wimmer said, “and I say to them that I’m having the time of my life.”
